Our emotions, opinions, and dreams are constantly in flux; for humans, it’s natural to find meaning through action itself. For example, while we can dwell on the 5 year goal of GC or the utopian uniform for the masses, we know there isn’t really an answer. That’s what this column exists for– a live update on exploration and learnings. Week by week.

Unfortunately, in the midst of the consumerist game we are playing, the present and the action have lost value to the signifier. Naturally, a symbol does not exist in the now nor directly interact with action. Not only is, culturally speaking, a mass uniform improbable and disgraceful, but making such a largescale work is not possible in one motion. Instead, as a designer, one must focus on the task at hand; one meager finishing detail on a pair of pants, one lighting adjustment on an ecomm image. Overtime, these various nownesses will compile to be a larger work in context. We hope. The Theolith Trosuer, soon to be renamed to just Trouser, is a perfect example of unmeditated genesis documented only due to the work itself.

Research & Development

Although we’ve had them inventoried for some months now, around Sept/Oct, we’ll release Theolith Trouser v2. They’re returning in black along with two new textiles. This isn’t restocking a hot selling pant, it’s continueing something [self-proclaimed] worthwhile. Speaking to a friend yesterday who got her pair early, her delight with the waxing waistband struck us. We worked on the waistband for months- over a year ago now. It was a natural development as we discussed themes of wearability, durability, protection, and spirit (the age old utility question), and it took time to get it dialed! Yet, with a friend’s appreciation of that one design detail, immediately we felt “longevityyy” wash over us. Or maybe “grace.”

This is what we seek when making clothes. Unspoken, yes. But, palpable. To simply make something worthwhile. And what is worthwhile? Comfort, emotion, strength. Each of these vague characteristics carry so much complexity for every one of us.

Do you recall how the Theolith evolved over time? Originally, in 2022, it was the Wide Leg Raw Denim Trouser– a name that feels hysterically algorithmic in our lovely 2026. We had made raw denim jeans before. Typically straight leg. Often made of deadstock denim or even USA grown cotton. While the history is rich and the activity-oriented function is present, we truly don’t need any more jeans (perhaps any clothing at all). All you need to do is visit a single thrift store to figure that out, and further, our perspective is: jeans are jeans are jeans. At the time, we wanted to take the utility of raw denim, the beautiful aging over time, and the history of cotton trousers, and make something more formal. We had a question, and still do, regarding what constitutes dressing up. The historical context of situational fibers seems to be reappropriated incorrectly in a tech-centered world.

Riffing off of our 2020 straight leg jeans, we attempted to create something that was both casual and formal whilst remaining both durable and comfortable. A lot contradiction, right? Open the leg. Add pleats and darts for shaping. Round the back pockets. Increase the hem. You can see how many small decisions come together to greatly alter a garment whilst honoring its DNA.

However, the struggle we found is that, with time, the design felt impersonal for some reason. This is objective of the onslaught of wide leg jeans in popular culture. Moreso, the global appeal of indigo warp, white weft and the streamlined nature of the design, left the emotional side of pants fall flat. They were too indirect, too inconsequential. Consider a pajama pant or an "elevated basic;" those garments intentionally have nothing to say– which says a lot.

From there, the Theolith was born. Need we highlight the changes and explain our reasoning? Take a look at the product page, and consider, how do the pants feel now?
